Boiler Operator Training: Optimizing Operations and Switching to Biomass

October 4

$30 - $55

Made possible by a grant from West Penn Power Sustainable Energy Fund

Facilitators(s):

  • Dan Rider, Maryland Department of Natural Resources;
  • Tom Wilson, Wilson Engineering Services;
  • Paul Sichau, Technical Training Coordinator, Shore Distributors, Inc.

Summary: Got a gas or oil boiler and you’re ready to consider biomass? Come learn about the beneftis of using biomass as a fuel, how to optimize boiler performance and common issues to boilers of all kinds, like MACT compliance. Come to one of the biomass energy leaders in Maryland, J.G. McIlvain lumber suppliers and distributors, to learn and network with others in the boiler and biomass industry. Continuing education credits will be provided.

What to Expect: Some classroom learning, hands-on learning, lunch, networking and seeing how to improve boiler performance. J.G. McIlvain is a planing mill that buys green lumber, dries it and processes it into a number of products. In the process, they generate sawdust and planer shavings that are fed into their biomass boiler to produce the heat they need on site. We’ll start in the classroom to cover the topics below, then will have lunch, followed by a tour of the mill and biomass boiler, and then an actual boiler performance tuning.  You’ll learn about the differences between biomass, oil and gas boilers, exemplary biomass boilers currently operating in the region, combustion basics and control systems. MACT compliance and solving common operations issues. Your instructors include a professional boiler tuner, an instructor for MD boiler operator licensing and staff from the MD Forest Stewardship Coordinating Committee.
